The Hobbit book reports by Ella and Kaelie

The Hobbit
By J.R. Tolkien
By Ella Stainwright

We've been reading the Hobbit by J.R. Tolkien for a few weeks and we have already finished it.  We fell into the amazing adventures immediately and made friends and enemies all throughout the book.  I have never read such a good book and it rivalled Harry Potter, which I love.  I could read the Hobbit a thousand times before I get bored.  It was exciting and scary at the same time and I could hardly bare to stop reading the Hobbit at the end of each chapter.

The Hobbit was an amazing story about a brave little hobbit going through many adventures to protect his friends and rescue long, lost, stolen treasure.

This hobbit was a well-respected hobbit until thirteen dwarves and a wizard turned up on his doorstep, wanting him to join their party so they wouldn't be an unlucky thirteen.  He finally agreed to go with them and regretted it every second of the adventure.  He had to face things he had only heard of such as giant spiders, goblins, wargs, trolls, dragons and a friend that wanted him dead.

During Bilbo's adventures, he was almost captured by trolls and escaped in the nick of time.  He takes on heaps of giant spiders single handedly.  He steals food from under the King Wood Elf's nose and he had a word battle with a real live dragon, all in one year.  He was almost killed many times and was given all the most dangerous tasks.  However, I think, all up, Bilbo rather enjoyed them because sixty years later he was caught bragging about his many adventures.

Bilbo missed his birthday, many parties and a lot of food that year, but I think, while he hated the adventures when he was having them, he was very proud afterwards.

Bilbo's true character shows during the book when he rescues his friends from giant spiders, wood elves, goblins and wargs - a devilish wolf.  The wargs and goblins come in quite a lot during the book to fight the dwarves so I am sure that at the end of his adventures Bilbo had a goblin-and-warg-phobia.

At the end of the adventure, the Battle of the Five Armies broke out.  Thorin, Kili and Fili, brave dwarves, died along with many other brave warriors who dared to fight the goblins, wargs, bats and crows.  Men, elves and dwarves, on one side, were outnumbered two to one but in the end they defeated their enemies and had peace in the lands once more.

When Bilbo goes home he has lost the respect of his fellow hobbits because he went on an adventure which is not good around where he lived.  He earned friendship, gold and an adventure to last him a lifetime.

I loved this book because it had so much adventure and every chapter had a new twist and turn.  It was filled with suspense and every time we stopped reading I wanted more.  It scary and exciting at the same time and it brought out Bilbo's true colours - a brave, strong little Hobbit who will always be there for his friends.

Bilbo's adventures have inspired me and may help me write my own stories later on.  I rate this book five stars out of five because it had everything I wanted, adventure, suspense and excitement.

The Hobbit Book Report By J.R. Tolkien
Report by Kaelie Stainwright
About the book:

Bilbo, Gandalf and the thirteen dwarves are the main characters from the Hobbit book. Gandalf kept on coming throughout the book.

The book is about the fifteen of them going to defeat Smaug the dragon and get the treasure from the Lonely Mountain.

On their adventures, they meet new creatures.  They meet Bard from Laketown (man), Beorn (half man, half bear), Elrond (elf), The Eagles, Dain son of Nain (dwarves), Ravens, the thrush, Lakemen, Wood elves, goblins, trolls and many get killed at the end at the Battle of the Five Armies.

Moral:

Bilbo never gave up saving his friends.  Some examples are: fighting giant spiders and other things.

Bilbo tried again to go down the tunnel and find Smaug the dragon’s weak spot.

Bilbo needed to stay with the dwarves beacuse he didn't want to be lost and he might never find them again. Bilbo learnt to stay with his friends to look after each other.

Thorin was greedy and he wouldn't share. If he wasn't greedy he would be happier.

I like this book because:

I liked this book because they go on adventurers and I love them. Also they fight in wars and they have to get free from danger. They meet new characters and make new friends.

New Chums Beach by Kaelie

Our Adventure at New Chums Beach

By Kaelie Stainwright

My family went to a beach called Whangapoua. We walked through a lake and then washed our feet off. Soon we started to climb the rocks that led to the track to New Chums Beach.

We had to climb over branches, rocks and trees. We came to a place where the track came up and had a rope to help us. When we were up we walked on and I fell over but didn’t hurt myself.

Next there was a big tree on the track and we climbed over it and continued on. The track was bumpy and soon we climbed the rocks to get down to the beach.

The beach had soft sand, lots of islands and some caves. It was not that cold and we went in the water and built sandcastles. I built my own and Daddy and Ella built one too. It was lots of fun.

Later on, we went back on the track and walked back. When we got back we walked through the lagoon. I had a AWESOME time.

Ella's favourite places in New Zealand

My Blog
The Best Places in New Zealand
By Ella Stainwright

We've been in New Zealand for only five weeks but we've done things that you can hardly imagine.  I can't tell you everything so I'll tell you my favourite things.

Hobbiton

We'd only been reading the Hobbit for a few days yet there we were at Hobbiton - the set of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films.  The Hobbit holes that the Hobbits live in were nothing like what I'd imagined.  They were round doors, all different colours, with flowers and tables in their front garden.  Hobbiton was better than I'd imagined with the tree above Bilbo's Hobbit hole being fake and the tricks of size.  Sir Peter Jackson would place Bilbo far away to make him look smaller than Gandalf the wizard.  Sir Peter Jackson was also a big fan of using family and friends in the movies.  For example, when Sam comes home in Lord of the Rings the girl who runs up to him is his daughter and his wife is holding her real baby.  The funniest thing I learnt was that when Gandalf walked into the Hobbit hole he didn't bump his head on purpose but they left it in because it looked good.

Did you know?
Half the people that go to Hobbiton haven't read the books or watched the movies - just like us.

Tumble Down Hill Farm

This awesome place, we stayed at, had a tree with a hammock, a tree house, passages that led to a pine forest, lookout, a spring and other places like that.  From the tree house we could shoot plums in the stream and it was easy to remember the ways through the passages - we never got lost.

Did you know?
One passage way went to stumps that looked like thrones.

Horse Riding

We went horse riding and I got the biggest and grumpiest horse of the lot.  His name was Dale.   I trotted, played and groomed the horses.  We got to saddle the horses, mount them and we even got to clean them at the end.  At the end Dale got away from me and I had to chase after him.  It was so much fun.

Did you know?
You should never walk behind a horse.

The Hot Water Beach

The Hot Water Beach was sooooooooooooo much fun.  We dug in the sand finding a perfect spot after a while.  We dug and our hole filled with water creating a sand spa.  We covered Daddy in sand and he was gross to look at.  We would run in the water to get cold and we would jump in the waves and surf them too.  When we went back to the spa it felt like larva especially if you had been dunked by Daddy.

Did you know?
The water is heated by thermal pockets       underneath that part of the beach.

White water rafting

We went rafting in a boat and we had to row through rocks and rapids.  Only one wave drenched us but it did more than that… we were almost flipped.  Half way through we got to feed the trout dark chocolate chips or so I thought. J.  Kaelie and I tried to fall out of the raft and at the end I almost disappeared down the rapids until a I realised I could stand up. J

Did you know?
Once a man flipped a school group of six over and that place was called Owen’s Wall named after the man who did the epic flip.

Sand Duning

We got to surf on a boogie board down two huge sand dunes – one with time to stop – one with splash water.  I went once with Mummy on each dune and the same with Daddy.  I went twice alone on the sand dune zooming down on my aqua board.  The splash dune went so much faster and I had my toe breaks in the whole time – at least more than the smaller dune.

Did you know?
The sand dunes weren’t near the beach.

The geyser – Lady Knox

We walked in a thermal wonderland park and watched an erupting geyser.  The ranger made it erupt and it was only meant to erupt 2 or 3 metres but it erupted 7 or 8.  It was so cool and I think it erupted high because it was naturally going to erupt anyway.  It was found by prisoners who were washing and dropped soap in the lake.  It erupted taking the prisoner’s clothes with it and they had to go off and search for their clothes.

Did you know?
The geyser would erupt naturally every 24 - 48 hours.
